listening: lungfish – talking songs for walking
i’m surprisingly awake and even got up early this morn. that’s quite a feat for an old man like myself who was out late at a rock show last nite. maybe i’ve got some life left in me yet!
fugazi – 9:30 club – 4-25-01
first off, i never thought i would see the day that i would buy tickets to fugazi thru ticketmaster. talk about colliding ideologies! i was lucky and got my tix thru the CD Cellar, but some friends shelled out over $5 in service fees to the bastards. Ticketmaster was basically doubling the cost.
the opener, Dead Meadow, rocked me for the first 10 minutes, but i didn’t like the second song that much(!). seriously, these guys were playing 10 minute, classic-rock, cream/sabbath/soundgardeny distortion drenched super low-end epic jams. i felt my nostrils vibrate, these guys were tuning to B or C i think…LOW! get it? anyway, i can only deal with the indierock kids playing classic rock novelty for so long, and their 45 minute set felt like MUCH longer.
this was a Positive Force benefit show (something to do with recycling needles) so i was expecting the usual lenghty diatribe from Marc Anderson, but he kept his preaching to a refreshing 5 minute talk, and we got along with our lives.
fugazi came on and immediately launched into 3 or 4 new songs. don’t think i’ve ever heard a band do that many new songs right off the bat. (of course, what are they all about if not breaking the mold?) none of the new stuff really struck me live. there were a couple of guy songs that sounded like they may have studio potential, but on the whole everything seemed a little lackluster. c’mon, fugazi’s been at this game for over 10 years now, its unavoidable and completely understandable that they should slow down and pull in the reins a bit. A lot of the new songs are really dub heavy and written with the 2nd drummer in mind. very nice beats and ambiance. just not the visceral, urgent band of repeater and IOTKT.
pulling from the back catalog, some of the highlights were: blueprint (don’t think i’ve heard that live before.. VERY good!), merchandise, walken’s syndrome, public witness program, exit only, reclamation and ended the show with promises (with an extra long dubby jam on the last piece).
it’s been interesting seeing them play so many times over the last 8 years. from being packed into a tiny club, drenched with sweat, hearing a band with a sound like the air itself is on fire.. to bopping my head to an super mellow extended dub jam. 2 different worlds? not saying that one is better than the other. in fact, these old bones and eardrums are very happy with a finely aged fugazi.
trivia note: fugazi has played pretty much the exact same equipment since 1986… same amps, same guitars. same incredible sound.
