a story from rodeoRob:
Reading your post, and comments with Scott, reminded me of a funny moment at the Wilco show last night. While Jeff Tweedy was in the middle of talking about how the band was starting the tour during a difficult time for both the band and the country, some jerk started yelling out song requests.
Jeff, clearly pissed, quickly yelled “I’m talking, you baseball hat wearer.”
The crowd loudly cheered, but the guy wouldn’t shut up. He was yelling out “what about the label,” in reference to Wilco recently leaving Reprise after a dispute over their new album. Tweedu responded: “Hey, you don’t need a label to make music. You just keep wearing your baseball hat.”
Funny, but sad in two ways: Sad because this a-hole ruined a chance for the crowd to hear what he had to say about the attacks, and sad because the a-hole is probably in a growing minority of frat-boy Wilco fans. I said minority, but it IS growing…
in on the kill takers
something i don’t understand: there’s gonna be a big anti-war march on DC tomorrow. that’s pretty easy to understand. war sucks. i don’t wanna do it. we’re probably going to have to pull the trigger at some point, but i still don’t like it. anyway, police are expecting a massive contingent of people demonstrating against the demonstrators.
pro war? enough to get out of bed early and inflict violence on your own countrymen? that’s what i don’t understand. if you’re that full of hate, go for a run, go lift some weights, start a freakin’ hardcore band. don’t protest protesters. silly rednex.

sigur ros review
sigur ros was last nite. i toughed out the sleepiness to see the most amazing show in the world. album leaf opened (the guy from tristesa’s solo thing). had a couple of good songs, but most were boring instrumental ambient schlock. LusciousLex, laura and i got decent standing space dead center of the balcony. eventually the couple in front of us left to attend to a collapsed hippy friend on the floor and we overtook their primo positions. sweet, now i had something to steady the camera. i was a bit nervous about the show. i’ve been listening to their recorded stuff for a while and absolutely love it, but i wondered how it would translate to a live show. especially with just 4 people (guitar, keys, bass n drums). if you’ve heard anything by them, you know it’s a huuuuuuge sound. i shouldn’t have doubted.
sigur ros live is probably one of the most amazing things i’ll ever hear. for the length of their 2 hour set, i had chills up and down my spine and my jaw dropped to the floor. jonsi bows his massively reverbed/delayed les paul and it sounds like the freakin’ sky is on fire. his voice, relatively free of effects, has to be one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. delicate and lilting one moment, ferocious and deafening the next. they ended their set with a song that was so intense, so incredibly loud it was unbelievable. i’ve seen bands like slayer and soulfly take that same stage and not come close to reaching their level of intensity. [photo]
i was half-jokingly comparing them to bill&ted’s ‘wyld stallyns’. but honestly, if there was ever music that could change the world, this would be it.
i noticed the four icelanders walking around before they went on. as they walked by us, i was amazed at how frail and tiny they looked. they couldn’t be much older than 22 or 23. then again, iceland does have the longest average lifespan… so maybe they’re hittin’ 35?
they set up in front of a huge moviescreen and had these amazing abstracted film loops playing, a different one for each song. [photo]
after they’d finished and left the stage, people were roaring for more. we waited and they made their way back onto center stage, joined arms and bowed. we clapped more, but they turned and walked back off the stage. begging for more music, the crowd started clapping in unison and shouting. our icelandic elves walked back up on stage, took another bow, and walked off again. after the applause wouldn’t die down, they walked out for a third time, looked uncomfortably at each other like “what do you want from us?… please go home.” and took a final bow. that made me giggle. finally, the house lights came up and we all got the point.
