Wheeling Hardcore
I spent most of my youth playing in various punk/hardcore bands. In the early 90s Wheeling, West Virginia was not exactly a mecca for this fringe culture, but there were about 200 or so kids that would come out to shows. We would book and promote shows anywhere we could rent space. The following archive is my document of that time. Please contact me if you have anything else that could be added to this page; photos, flyers, mp3s, etc.
Thanks

I went to Bethany College from ‘93 to ‘97. Some fellow students from Wheeling turned me on to UDR – still the best hardcore band I have ever seen perform. I saw UDR at Bethany and a old firehouse in Moundsville and various other places. I can’t believe I found the .mp3 on this site – I have been looking for years to find some music to listen to. Thanks!
wow i feel 17 again. this stuff puts a smile on my face.
Oh NO! Struma on the web? If we knew that the Internet was in the not too distant future I think we would have done better…But what the hell, we were kids. It actually doesn’t sound too bad considering…
Corey! I was listening to Sleeper in the car today and am jonesing for the old Wheeling hardcore. All I got is Struma, UDR, and Sleeper (from NYC). I’d kill for SNRG or Standup. If you have info on any of the old group, like Vernon Hartner or others, drop me a line.
Nice to see you’re doing well. Glad to see the old ‘core is still going.

[...] This time around, we head into demo territory. Here we have The Union Deposit Road, a band that existed from 1994-1998, based in Fredericksburg, VA featuring members from Wheeling, WV including my college friend Corey. I salvaged this tape from WMWC, the radio station at Mary Washington College, a few years ago when they were jettisoning their mini-collection of cassettes. This demo features two alternate mixes (I think) of tracks that later appeared on the American Rock Classic album (downloadable for free at Corey’s Wheeling Hardcore page). [...]
Hey Corey, you may remember me from back in the day. Thanks for putting up these tunes. I still have a UDR shirt that I wear pretty regularly. Hope life is treating you well.
-Josh
Corey, awesome site. I wore my UDR shirt to the last Dismemberment show in Pittsburgh a few years back. Any chance of getting this on Cd? These songs bring back fond memories.
Cory,
We don’t know each other. My name’s Chris Sivert. I used to go by the name of Chris Intruder, and played in the thrash band Army of Indochine from 1995-1997. I was also in Gainer with Vince Stafford. I’m in a band with Steve Moore and Don Woeber called Sugardown. I was a late commer to the scene, and UDR were already gone. I’d always heard people speak highly of bala and UDR. However, those tracks were rare. Thanks very much for putting those songs on your site! That praise of long ago was merited.
Hey Corey.
Long time since I have seen anyone from the old Wheeling crew.
Carrie and I have been doing well…3 kids now and living in the valley (Weirton for now).
Great to see some of the old hanger music is still out there. I have one old original tape of bala and one record of UDR….lost my Sleeper tape from that show a long time ago. I keep trying to gather up this old stuff just for old times sake
Good times for sure.
Time flies when you have a family. Say hello sometime. Take care.
-Matt
man how the time flies
holy shit!!!!!!
vern on the net.
whats up guys. I was bragging about my anonymity and how i can’t even be googled then my brother steve asked if I had tried google lateley and I got this. oh well, bill collectors still can’t find me.
oh yeah this is a test.
and happy birthday soon.

amber’s room videos, the Lincoln/Hoover show at the hanger is up on the youtube.
Freaking awesome: Hoover/Lincoln vids link is here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=-4hltWHqC5o. We used to watch that video soooooo much. “Try this shit in your teeth man”
I added Amber’s Room and the YouTube links
Hey Corey, long time! This is Meagan Palmer,we knew each other “back in the day”.It’s so funny to think about Wheeling and the Hanger shows. Hope you’re doing well. By the way,Beau’s last name was Ditmar.
wow that amber’s room stuff really takes me back. that’s so much fun to watch. i have the bala footage from the lincoln/hoover show, i’ll work on converting it but i’m lazy so if someone wants to beat me to it that would be fun to see on youtube.
hey the 1st half of the sugardown show is up.
on ye ole you tube.
word
How did you manage to leave out SNRG (aka Snurg)? That was among the first out of our age range, and it included a fantastic vocal cameo from Lisa Nuzum (in your eyes)… How about happy melty people?? shotgun red breakout the whiskey…two for one you know I’m buyin… don’t come back til I shoot something
sam, i only listed bands that had music or video online. i really need to digitize my snrg tape. i’ve been thinking about putting together a facebook page version of this too.
that would be awesome. That really was a lot of fun back then. Wheeling had a pretty good run w/ music. A lot of places can’t say that and there was always a decent turn out.
Since this is the only place I’ve seen Vern pop up in the last decade… Get @ me fool, daddy misses that sweet ass. Me and Phil have been wanting to track you down fo a long time.
is the amber’s room stuff still on youtube and any word when we can see any more old wheeling bands on there
i 1st saw the udr at el tor grotto shortly after moving to the valley in the early ’90s. that winter i got a guitar and played the riff for junky until my strings rusted… still one of my favorite songs to play. thanks for the memories guys.
Wow. Thanks for including Output. I had a lot of fun in those days. i just wish i had some musical talent so i might be able to carry on.
Hooooly shiiiiiiiit!!!!!!!
This is bonkers!!!!!
I think I was like five years old when I was in Amber’s Room!
Hey everybody! Long time no see. Hope everyone is well!
Will
Wow, memories lol, some of these shows were the best times I’ve ever had. I was pretty laid back so doubt any of you guys even remember who the hell I am, but just wanted to say to the gentlemen who performed, it was a blast. I only got to briefly play in a poppy-hardcore thing called DSX but the scene around Wheeling, while small, was always dedicated. I think the band that was real big around here while we were playing was Ahimsa, but I couldn’t find anything online from them.
Anyone know if Sivert’s band is still playing? Phil A. and I just started a pop-punk band w/ some dude from around Washington, PA and would be great to find some people to put some shows together with in a couple months.
-Seth
Oh yeah, and gdit I miss Doug Turner (always forget the other name), if anyone sees him tell him I said hi.
good stuff. i played with josh b justin n and dan k in 13a. always remember those times as good. married with 2 kids. man life really takes over. love to all and great stuff
BALA And Output Great names when the wheeling scene was thriving what happened? Love walking down memory road thanks man.
